ladrão was a difficult project to work on. The initial project goal was to design collateral for any social campaign of our choosing, or our creation. By nature, I’m very patriotic to my home country of Brazil, it means a lot to my identity. And recently, it’s been under quite a political turmoil.
ladrão came from a desire to speak out in this chaos. A lot of research went into building a language specific and unique to the Brazilian demographic. The main hallmark of this is the type selection. All of the collateral for the project was done using a particular type style: pixação. Pixação is a style of graffiti that is entirely indigenous to Brazil. It’s key aspects include a very sharp and thorny approach to letter-forms as well as the harsh, black monoline aesthetic. But more importantly than that, pixação is deeply rooted in Brazilian activism. Pixação itself translates to “stain” or “cover with tar” and artists will often write the name of corrupt politicians as a means of calling them out.
And that was the main goal of ladrão, to call out a Brazilian political criminal for his crimes.
